Buddhist Tour of India with Lisa Ernst
October 26 – November 9, 2019

Combining a meditation retreat with a Buddhist pilgrimage, this tour is an exploration of both ancient Buddhist history and living Buddhist traditions.

First we explore the ancient sites in the North and East of India, where the Buddha practiced and taught – including Bodhgaya, where it is believed he was enlightened under the bodhi tree. A descendant of this tree is still in the spot. We will have the opportunity to meditate under this tree. I did it in 2017 and it was a highlight of the tour for me. We’ll also visit Varanasi for sunset Aarti at the Ganges and a Sunrise boat ride. Then to Sarnath, where Buddha gave his first sermon – before moving on to the mountains of Dharmsala to experience Buddhist life in the Himalayas. Dharmsala is the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan community in exile. There’s also an optional extension to visit Amritsar and the amazing Golden Temple. Full itinerary and details are here.

Mindfulness Meditation Workshop for ADHD and Anxiety

Saturday, January 19, 9 a.m. – Noon

Lisa Ernst, meditation teacher and founder of One Dharma Nashville, and Terry Huff, LCSW, psychotherapist and author of Living Well with ADHD, will offer a workshop on meditation for adults with ADHD and/or anxiety. The workshop will include lecture, practice, and discussion and will address the following:

1. Why meditate for ADHD and anxiety?
2. Basics of practice
3. Different practices for
a. selective attention (focusing)
b. open awareness (expanding)
c. compassion (for self and other)

Research shows that mindfulness practice improves concentration, attention regulation, self-observation (of mental activity), working memory, and emotion regulation.

The workshop will be held at The Nashville Friends House, 530 26th Ave N. Cost is $60 and is due by the January 15 registration deadline; after $75. A reduced fee option is available to anyone who can’t afford the full fee.

Start your New Year on the cushion by joining us for a half day intention setting retreat. At the beginning of a New Year, it is customary to take stock of our lives and the world we live in, to review the previous year and set our intentions for the upcoming twelve months and beyond. Bringing this evaluation onto the cushion, to look with fresh eyes and an open heart, can help us refine and clarify our direction and to live from the truest part of ourselves.

Led by meditation teacher Lisa Ernst, the morning will include instructions, periods of sitting and walking meditation, dharma talk and discussion. Cost is $50 is due by Friday, December 28. A Year to Live: How to Live This Year as if it Were Your Last

In our death adverse culture, few of us reflect on the inevitability of our death or that it could happen at any time. Yet the Buddha recommended that we use death as an object of contemplation, not to frighten us, but to help us awaken to the fragile, fleeting, and precious nature of our lives.

Contemplating death as part of our meditation practice and inquiring together in community encourages us to be more real, more clear about our priorities, less self centered and more courageous. Paradoxically, many of us discover that contemplating our mortality is vital to putting us in touch with a deep sense of gratitude and a way of living that is more fully in alignment with our values, bringing forward our best, truest self.

We will meet once a month for 12 months to explore the values most vital to us when we recognize our time is limited. Each monthly class meets for 2 hours and is organized around a theme – from looking at our ideas and beliefs about death, to reflections on impermanence and emptiness, to writing a life review, to re-imagining our life purpose, to preparing for death, and most importantly, fully engaging our lives here and now.

This course is inspired by the book, A Year to Live, by the late, beloved teacher Stephen Levine. The book will be our guide, supplemented by source material, inquiry, meditations, deep listening, and writing exercises.

You will participate in a setting where everyone can safely explore their views about mortality and feel supported by compassionate, wise community. Guiding teacher Lisa Ernst will oversee the course and participants will have an optional chance to prepare and present some of the material. During this year we will have the opportunity to rise to the level of our deepest aspirations. Please join us!

Cost: Sliding scale $375 – $575. Please pay at the highest level you can afford so we can support those who need to pay less. A deposit of $100 reserves your spot with the balance due by 12/30. When we look at situations through the lens of our past conditioning, often expectations and fears mislead us. Meditation practice helps us to see with clear eyes and an open heart, meeting each moment as an open field of possibility, unstained by past conditioning. This is the beginner’s mind that refreshes our view of life and how we connect with the world.

In this retreat we will return to the simplicity of breath and body, then gradually open our awareness to include all that is appearing and passing away in this moment. Spiritual freedom arises through this capacity to touch our ever-changing life with a fresh heart that sees no ultimate separation. All levels of experience are welcome, from those new to retreats to experienced practitioners who wish to refresh and return the home of beginner’s mind.

Led by Lisa Ernst, the retreat will include sitting and waking meditation, instructions, dharma talk and q&a. Please bring a bag lunch. Cost is $50 plus dana (generosity offering) to the teacher. Please join us for a rural retreat near Nashville at the Bethany Hills Retreat Center. In this retreat we will stabilize attention and deepen concentration through the breath and body, then gradually open our awareness to the boundless space of mind and heart. The retreat will include mindfulness, open awareness and compassion practices. These practices help us cultivate a quality of compassionate presence that embraces even our most difficult experiences with equanimity and insight. The practices also empower and support us in our challenging everyday lives. As we awaken from the illusion of separateness, we experience intimacy and interconnection with all things.

This silent retreat will include sitting and walking meditation, instruction, dharma talks and private meetings with the teacher. Retreat cost is $265 if paid by November 6; $290 after. The five night option is $425 if paid by November 7; $450 after. A $100 deposit holds your spot. Please indicate if you will be attending the three or five night option. The retreat fee covers lodging and all meals. The teacher is compensated separately through the practice of dana (generosity) from those who attend the retreat. There will be an opportunity at the retreat to make a generosity offering to the teacher. A scholarship spot is available if you need financial assistance.
